Supplication is the believer’s weapon when matters grow severe, conditions darken and paths narrow; there is no refuge from God except in Him, no one who answers but Him, and no one more merciful than Him. Supplication is also the very marrow of worship, for it is a display of humility, need, obedience, submission and meekness before God, and this is the deep meaning of acts of worship, indeed the very purpose for which they were prescribed, since worship is humility, submission and obedience to the supreme Creator. He also loves those of His servants who turn to Him; indeed He descends in the last third of the night and says: “Who calls upon Me, that I may answer him? Who asks of Me, that I may give him? Who seeks My forgiveness, that I may forgive him?” Supplication is the best use of one’s time and the greatest means for a servant to earn good deeds. If a servant occupies himself with it at all times, it is the best means of drawing him closer to his Lord, the greatest cause of his happiness, comfort, tranquillity and success in all his affairs, and a key to every good he attains in this world and the Hereafter. It is also a cause of the believer’s feeling of ease and peace and of being in God’s company.
