The book presents a radical critical project aimed at the decisive separation of religion (theology) from politics (the state), demonstrating that confusing the two is the cause of religious conflicts and wars and of the spread of superstition. In its twenty chapters, Spinoza lays the foundation for the first historical and scientific critical method for interpreting the texts of the Bible, in place of rigid ecclesiastical interpretations, and discusses the issues of revelation, miracles and prophecy from a rational, natural perspective. The book concludes with a fundamental political thesis affirming that the true purpose of the state is to protect “the freedom to philosophise, think and express oneself”, and that recognising this freedom does not threaten the security of states but is the essential guarantee of their stability and of the integrity of religion itself.
