The Men of Marj Dabiq: The Story of the Ottoman Conquest of Egypt and the Levant

Not one of the men who filled the plain of Marj Dabiq on that hot summer night knew exactly how things would end. All they knew was that war had become a settled matter, that it could break out at any moment, and that their stay on this wide plain would not last long. As for how fortunes would be divided among them: who would be taken prisoner, who would fall as a martyr in battle, and whether victory would go to the army led by their sultan, Al-Malik Al-Ashraf Abu Al-Nasr Qansuh Al-Ghuri, or to the army of their enemy, Sultan Al-Muzaffar Selim Khan ibn Bayezid the Ottoman, none of them knew anything of that. So begins the great writer Salah Issa’s engaging book on the Ottoman conquest of Egypt and the Levant. As in his earlier historical works, The Men of Raya and Sakina, Tales from the Nation’s Notebook, and Al-Maqrizi’s Margins: Tales from Egypt, history here is not the history of rulers but the history of peoples, in how they dealt with their lives and faced the dangers that threatened them.
