The story describes the condition of the gamblers at the casino, explains the casino game and the psychology of the people gambling there, and portrays a realistic picture of the social relations between the poor and the rich. The novel was written in three weeks in order to be delivered to the publisher on the agreed date. The Gambler is not considered Dostoevsky’s most important work, but it undoubtedly sheds light on important aspects of the author’s own personality: Dostoevsky was exactly like the hero of the novel, a gambler to the point of sickness, who lost enormous sums at the gaming tables in Germany, France and Switzerland, and was unable to rid himself of this scourge, as he called it, for many long years, until he stopped playing for good in 1871. The novel offers a serious analysis of the problem of addiction to gambling, and the novelist wrote it at the height of his pathological addiction.
