Memories of My Melancholy Whores (Saleh Almani Translation)

On his ninetieth birthday the hero of this story, an obscure journalist and aged bachelor, decides to give himself a night of wild love with a virgin adolescent. The virgin, procured by an old madam friend, is a young girl of a special kind of beauty, and the heated night turns into a year of great changes in the hero’s life. Through his flooding memories he relives the events of his paid sexual adventures and his experiences in a confession that brings him to the brink of death, not from old age but from a pure, long-awaited love. Memories of My Melancholy Whores is a stunning masterpiece told by a master storyteller. ‘A haunting text that stays with you… literature of the highest order.’ Times Literary Supplement. ‘Read it… this is a complete, mature piece of literature, the like of which you will rarely find on bookshop shelves these days.’ Chicago Tribune. ‘Unforgettable… as with all of Márquez’s writing.’ Washington Post. ‘A luminous text… the brilliance of this novel rests entirely on the precision and credibility of its narrator.’ New York Times Book Review.
