‘The palm trunk to which his body was bound rose towards the sky. A sinful man laden with shame, seeking salvation neither for himself nor for anyone else. From atop his cross he gazes at a land on which he had longed to see the trace of his footsteps; now his feet hang in the air beneath a sky in which there is no place for him, having become cursed by the testimony of all: Muslims and Christians, Sunni and Shia, Byzantines and Copts. He lived his life wearing the garb of doubt, and today he dies with a single certainty: that life is an absurdity not worth living, and that man in this life is like a shadow puppet. Does a shadow leave any trace?’ This novel is not merely a text about a critical period of Egypt’s history, marked by national, sectarian and ethnic conflict at the end of the Fatimid state; it is a wide-ranging human experience in the search for identity among the dozens of affiliations that divide it. A journey through the concepts of identity, homeland and belonging, and a new tale from the pages of the past that casts its shadow over the present. Cover design: Karim Adam.
