Emma has often been regarded as one of Jane Austen’s most accomplished works, thanks to its heroine, who is at once flawed and utterly charming. The novel is enlivened by the humour of its protagonist, especially when she credits herself with special powers for understanding relationships between people. In this novel, as in her others, Austen shows her insight into the human heart, which has allowed her works to transcend time and remain alive and beloved. Emma Woodhouse is a beautiful, clever, rich and single young woman who lives a happy life and insists that she has “no need of love or marriage”, yet nothing delights her more than meddling in the love lives of others. When she ignores the warnings of her loyal friend Mr. Knightley and tries to find a suitable husband for her protégée, Harriet Smith, her scheme unravels and events take a turn she never expected.
