This is a precious chapter in a slim volume in which Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyya spoke, in several places in his books, about the nature of prayer in an original way unprecedented as far as I know. He spoke of the heart and marrow of prayer, which is humble attentiveness from the opening takbir to the closing salutation, and brought forth in it everything wondrous and beneficial. The first place is within his book on the question of listening, at the end of which he says: this is but an indication and a very brief sketch of the taste of prayer. The second is in his book on prayer and the ruling on the one who abandons it; since this chapter, for all its preciousness, was buried among those pages, it was most useful to set it apart so that its benefit may reach all Muslims, under headings suited to its sections. The third is in a letter of his to one of his brothers. On the word taste, Ibn Taymiyyah said: the term taste is used for everything that is felt and whose pain or pleasure is experienced.
