In this book Le Bon proceeds from a severe critical vision in keeping with the intellectual mode that prevailed in nineteenth-century Europe, advancing the central thesis that the ancient Jews possessed no genuine independent civilisation. He holds that the Hebrews did not contribute to building the sciences, arts or human knowledge, regarding them as nomadic peoples who never passed beyond the lower stages of civilisation, and that when they settled in Palestine they borrowed from their civilised neighbours their customs and their intellectual and religious faults, relying on outside labour to build their cities and palaces for lack of their own industrial and architectural skills.
